Two people were killed on Tuesday, December 8 while several others injured after a 14-seater matatu plunged into River Sondu Miriu on Kisii-Kisumu highway.
While confirming the incident, Kericho County police commander Silas Gichunge said that driver of the matatu died on the spot while one passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at Sigowet Hospital.
Gichunge said that the matatu was heading to Eldoret when it collided with a lorry which was transporting mattresses to Kisii town.
He told the media that the driver of the ill-fated matatu lost control of the vehicle as a result of suspected brake failure.
The number of injured passengers could not be immediately established as police officers were still ongoing with the rescue mission.
The accident that attracted hundreds of onlookers from Madogo leading to a traffic snarl-up on the highway with police having a hectic time controlling the surging crowd.
Elsewhere, three people also died on the spot after they motorcycle, they were riding rammed into an oncoming bus along the Garissa-Nairobi highway.
According to an eye witness, the bodaboda rider was trying to overtake a probox, which was headed to Garissa town, when he rammed into the Nairobi bound bus.
“The rider who was over speeding underestimated the bus distance and just as he was about to overtake the probox, he realized the bus was closing in and out of panic tried to get to his lane but it was too late.”
“He hit the probox on the side, colliding head-on with the bus. They all died instantly,” the witness added.
