Division has emerged in Deputy President William Ruto camp as his allies fight on which candidate should be the flag bearer in the upcoming Machakos Senatorial by-election.
According to People Daily, DP Ruto’s allies from Machakos County have sharply differed on the best candidate to fly the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) flag in the mini poll.
UDA Chairman Johnstone Muthama has found himself at the heart of the fight after it emerged that he has a preferred candidate.
The former Machakos Senator is said to be rooting for former Machakos County Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala to succeed the late Boniface Kabaka while another faction in the DP’s camp is vouching for Ex-Agriculture Assistant Minister Peter Kaindi.
Muthama, who has in the recently positioned himself to the hustler movement representative in the Ukambani region, is said to be keen on influencing who becomes the next Machakos County senator.
The UDA chairman is said to be confident to deliver the Machakos senator seat to the ‘Hustler Nation’.
Muthama also played a big role in Feisal Bader’s win in Msambweni on December 15, 2020.
According to reports the newly formed party has already attracted 10 aspirants for the Machakos senatorial race.
Among big names who have expressed interest in flying the UDA flag include Nairobi based Businessman Gilbert Maluki, politician Patrick Mathuki, former Matungulu West MCA Magdaline Ndewa, Kiala, University of Nairobidon John Musingi, insurance underwriter Urbanus Ngengele, Peter Kaindi, Titus Ndambuki and Winfred Mutua.
Kaindi who is touted to win the UDA ticket held a meeting with DP Ruto at his Karen office on Monday, January 4.
He was accompanied by three Tanga Tanga MPs from Ukambani namely Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East) and Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town).
The MPs vouched for Kaindi saying that he’s the best suited and politically strategic to deliver a win for the Hustler Nation in the March 18, by-election.
“I will campaign for him in Machakos Town and he will definitely deliver a win for us.”
The publication further reported that DP Ruto was set to host all the UDA aspirants at his Karen home on Wednesday, January 6, where they are expected to angry on one candidate.
Governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) have settled on former Mwala MP John Mutua Katuku as the party’s flag bearer in the upcoming by-election.
“After extensive consultations with party leadership, aspirants and people of Machakos, we are pleased to announce that John Mutua Katuku has joined Maendeleo Chap Chap and will be the party’s candidate in the forthcoming Senate by-election for Machakos County,” Governor Mutua stated during Katuku’s unveiling.
