A Friday dawn fire has destroyed structures at the cereals and ‘mitumba’ sections at Gikomba market.
At the time of going to press, the fire had gutted down dozens of business structures even as traders counted losses running into hundreds of thousands.
This was the umpteenth time that a dawn fire had burned down the country’s biggest mitumba market.

On June 25, structures and goods worth millions went down in flames even as the government promised to upgrade the buildings and offer compensation to traders.
In 2019 alone, more than three incidences of huge infernos brought a section of the market to ashes.
And even as the traders tried to put out the fire, their efforts to salvage their items dwindled with every passing minute.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
