Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be able to welcome back Edinson Cavani when Manchester United take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

The Uruguayan striker, whose four goals for the club have all come on the road, is available for selection after serving his three-match domestic ban.

With the 33-year-old not having played since the Wolves game on 29 December, he should be fresh for this crunch encounter, in which a win would see the Reds move three points clear at the summit of the Premier League table, ahead of Sunday’s trip to face current leaders Liverpool at Anfield.

“Edinson has trained well since he’s been banned. He’s had a couple of days off as well – you can’t train too much. He’s ready to go,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“He’s a different option. He’s a different type of striker to Mason [Greenwood], Anthony [Martial] and Marcus [Rashford]. I’m glad to have him back and that’s why we brought him in.

“He’s contributed really well so far. I’m sure he’ll be really important for us between now and the end of the season. The end of the season starts tomorrow night.“

There’s also encouraging news on a quartet of Reds whose involvement in the game – originally set to be played in September, but postponed due to United’s European exploits – was thrown into doubt after Saturday’s win over Watford.

Eric Bailly was forced to come off during the first half at Old Trafford with a neck injury, while Ole revealed in his post-match press conference that Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba had all been ruled out of the third-round tie with fitness issues.

However, Lindelof and Shaw played a full part in pre-match preparations at the Aon Training Complex on Monday, while Bailly and Pogba were involved to some degree.

“Yeah, all of them trained today,” Ole added. “Paul and Eric didn’t do all of it, but Luke and Victor did all of it. I’ve got a decent amount of players to pick from. Let’s see with Paul and Eric and how they are tomorrow.”

Phil Jones is still out injured, while Solskjaer revealed on Friday that Argentinian pair Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero – neither of whom have featured in 2020/21 – are available for transfer.
