Eight suspected thieves were on Sunday shot dead by police officers in a botched robbery in Industrial Area.
The suspects had broken into Sihra Coffee Machinery Service and Gensham Wood Enterprises godowns and were in the process of loading the stolen goods onto a Mitsubishi canter (Reg No KAS 340M).
A report filed at the Industrial Area Police Station under OB NO 37/23/08/2020 read: “It was reported by the chief controller that there was a burglary and stealing at a godown along Lungalunga road opposite shell petrol station. Police officers from industrial police station swung into action.”
At least 12 robbers brandishing guns and machetes were at the scene of crime.
Police shot down eight of them as four others managed to get away on foot but sustained gunshot injuries.
“They were challenged by officers to surrender but opened fire. The officers returned fire fatally injuring eight of them,” the report read on.
Police recovered two homemade pistols each loaded with 9mm ammunition, a revolver and five pangas.
The stolen goods which will be kept as exhibits and the lorry were taken to the station.
The remains of the eight who are said to have been well into their 20s, have been moved to City Mortuary for postmortems.
Nairobi police boss Rashid Yakub confirmed the incident as he noted that hunt for the escapees was on.
