Former County Secretary and Health CEC Dr. Robert Ayisi has succumbed to COVID-19 complications, his family confirmed on Thursday morning, November 5.
The former Nairobi County official was admitted at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi for treatment.
The deceased served in Nairobi County during former Governor Evans Kidero’s tenure at City Hall, where he replaced Lilian Ndegwa who had been sacked following corruption allegations.
Ayisi served as Nairobi City Council’s Medical Health officer from 2009-2014 before being appointed Health Chief Officer in July 2014.
On Monday, November 2, Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko was forced to delete the social media post on the fake death alert of Dr. Ayisi which was later dismissed by his family as he was still alive at the time.
Sonko, in his retracted post, said Dr. Ayisi will “be remembered for his role in streamlining the health sector in Nairobi County.”
“It is with great sorrow and sadness that I announce the death of Dr. Robert Ayisi….he will be remembered for his role in streamlining the health sector in Nairobi county. My deepest condolences to his family, relatives and friends,” read part of Sonko’s tweet.
The Governor also proceeded to send two staff on a compulsory leave over the fake death announcement after confirmed that Dr Ayisi was not dead as claimed by staff.
Nairobi County Director of Communication Jacob Elkana said that the two employees had been directed to proceed on compulsory leave to pave the way into investigations on why they sent the alert without first consulting the family.
“There was a technicality that happened. Some of our staff sent out the alert without proper consultation,” Elkana Jacob said.
