Ex-NMG Journalist Dies in Hit and Run Accident

A former Nation Media Group (NMG) journalist, Dan Otieno, was on Monday night, November 9 killed in a hit and run road accident in Uthiru, Kiambu County.

While confirming the incident, Dagoretti OCPD Francis Wahome said that the former NMG editor was hit by an unknown car on Waiyaki Way as he crossed the road at 9pm on Monday, November 9.

The police said that Otieno was rushing home to beat the curfew when he was involved in the hit-and-run accident.

Wahome said that the journalist died on the spot and his body left lying on the road.

The police boss said that the vehicle that hit him has not yet been traced and investigations into the matter have been launched.

“The body was taken to the City Mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the vehicle,” said Francis Wahome.

He served as NMG’s Kisumu and Nyeri bureaus chief and reporter before his exit from the company a few years ago.

Until his untimely death, Otieno was working as a media consultant and public relations practitioner in firm associated with former NMG Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi.

Otieno becomes the fourth journalist from NMG to die in a hit and run accident in 2020 after the death of veteran journalist and author Ken Walibora, Raphael Nzioki and Christine Omulando.

On March 7, Raphael Nzioki died in a hit-and-run accident at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street while Walibora’s death resulted from a hit and run along Landhies Road on April.

Christine Omulando, a sub-editor with The EastAfrican also died under the same circumstance at the Khoja Mosque roundabout.
