The identity of a Kenyan who died in Texas, USA on August 29 has been identified.
Authorities identified the deceased as Geoffrey Chepkwony whose body was found floating in a river in Houston.
According to a local daily, Chepkwony comes from Bomet County and had been living in the US alone as his family is in Kenya.
He went to the US in 2016 after he won a Green Card lottery.
Police reports show that members of the public informed the Houston Police Department that an unidentified body had been found
“Witnesses reported seeing a body in Buffalo Bayou near a bridge at the above address. The HPD Dive Team responded to the scene to recover the body,” the police said.
The police ran the man’s fingerprints through their data base and identified him as Geoffrey Chepkwony.
Initial police investigations revealed that he had no physical traumas on his body, according to HPD Homicide Detective S. Sylvester.
Sam Makaya, a resident of Houston Texas is quoted saying that Chepkwony has been battling depression and was using drugs for his mental issues.
Mr. Makaya was contacted by the police as his name was listed as the person of contact and has since been given the power of attorney by the deceased family in Kenya.
There is an ongoing GoFundMe fundraising campaign to have his body flown home for burial.
