IEBC Announces Date for Matungu By-election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the date for the Matungu Constituency by-election to March 4, 2021.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati through a gazette notice dated December 15 said that by-election will be held concurrently with Huruma, London, Hell’s Gate, Kiamokama and Kitise/Kithuku ward polls.

The announcement follows the conclusion of Msambweni constituency election where Feisal Bader was announced the winner.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi had days ago declared the Matungu Parliamentary seat vacant following the death of Justus Murunga.

Justus Murunga died a month ago while being rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Mumias.

The legislator had earlier been admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu where he was treated for hypertension and diabetes.

The by-election is likely to escalate political rivalry in the country ahead of 2022 election as s Deputy President William Ruto, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga and Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi flex political muscles.
