Kenya Records 1,211 Cases as 17 Succumb to the Virus


Health CS Mutahi Kagwe confirms 1,211 new Covid-19 cases from 9,304 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

The total number of cases now stand at 76,404.

COVID-19 death-toll rises to 1,366 after 17 more patients succumb to the virus.

CS Kagwe, in a statement on Saturday, said 1,169 of the new patients were Kenyans and 42 foreigners, whereas the youngest was a month old and the oldest 95.

The 9,304 tests raised the total number carried out in Kenya so far, since confirmation of the first case in March, to 833,004.

Earlier, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), confirmed the deaths of two more doctors – dental surgeon Nira Patel and nephrologist Anthony Were Omolo.

The ministry further reported that 368 more patients had recovered from the disease, 265 of them at home and 103 in hospital, raising the total to 51,352.

CS Kagwe said 1,134 patients had been hospitalised by Saturday and while 6,805 were under home-based care. Of those in hospital, 67 were under intensive care (ICU), up from the 52 reported on Friday.

Of the 67, 36 were on ventilatory support and 31 on supplemental oxygen. Another 77 people were separately on supplemental oxygen, 73 of them in general wards and for in high dependency units (ICU).

In terms of case distribution by county, Nairobi recorded 410 new infections, Mombasa 102, Migori 93, Bungoma 79, Uasin Gishu 55, Kiambu 42, Nakuru 40, Kilifi 39, Nyeri and Kisumu 30 each, Busia 28, Laikipia 27, Turkana 26, Machakos and Meru 25 each, and Kisii 24.

Kajiado reported 21, Trans Nzoia 17, Kakamega and Nyamira 12 each, Homa Bay 11, Siaya nine, Narok eight, Kitui seven, Embu five, and Nandi, Kwale, Murang’a, Kericho and Garissa four each.

Taita Taveta and Lamu had three new patients each, Elgeyo Marakwet, Isiolo and Tana River two each, and Wajir and Makueni one each.
