Manchester City and Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been named the 2019/20 Premier League Player of the Season, beating off stiff competition from a string of players from league champions Liverpool.
The award comes barely 24 hours after Manchester City were bundled out of Champions League by Lyon who beat them 3-1.
De Bruyne’s crowning moment sums up a wonderful season for him since he arrived at the Etihad, scoring 13 league goals and assisting 20 others.
His goals and assists helped City become the highest scoring team during the season in which Liverpool won the English top flight completion by a whopping 18 points.
But in spite of Liverpool winning the league, it was De Bruyne’s performances all season that won him accolades, beating a host of star players including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson who was billed to scoop the award was voted Football Writers Player of the Season.
De Bruyne was the only City player nominated for the competition this season in a field dominated by Liverpool stars.
Yesterday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the Season while defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was named Young Player of the Season.
