A 23-year-old man from Homa Bay County has allegedly committed suicide after claims of being visited and served food by his dead grandmother.
The man identified as Fred Omondi hanged himself on a tree in a bush at Ogongo Sub Location in Mbita Sub-county.
His decomposing body was found dangling from a tree by a boy who was looking after goats two weeks after he went missing.
According to reports, Omondi left home two weeks ago without telling any of the family members where he was going.
While confirming the incident, Ogongo sub-location Assistant Chief Margaret David said that the deceased family had reported Omondi’s disappearance at his office.
“The family reported that Omondi’s phone was switched off since he went missing,” the chief told the Standard.
His wife narrated to the police how the deceased used to complain of being visited and given food by his late grandmother adding that he used to come home with food items claiming that they were given to him by his late grandmother.
According to Mbita police boss James Ademba, Omondi could have been mentally ill and took his life as a result of the alleged visits by his dead granny.
“The wife told us the deceased used to complain of the grandmother’s numerous but secretive visits. At times he could go home with sugar saying he had been given by the grandmother,” Ademba said.
The police boss further added that the deceased had threatened in the past that he would one day kill himself over the matter.
“He had reportedly issued the threat but people thought he was not serious. We cannot conclude that he committed suicide but we are waiting for the postmortem report,” Ademba added.
The deceased body was taken to Homa Bay Hospital morgue awaiting postmortem.
