Matungu MP Justus Murunga Dies After Collapsing At Home

Matungu Member of Parliament Justus Murunga Makokha is dead.

The first-time lawmaker died on Saturday night, November 14 while being admitted at the St. Mary’s Mission Hospital in Mumias, Kakamega County.

Murunga reportedly collapsed at his Matungu home before he was rushed to the facility.

His cousin, Musa Ekaya told K24 Digital that the MP fell ill again after he was discharged from the Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu, on Friday, November 13 where he was being treated for diabetes and Covid-19.

“When he arrived at his Matungu home, his diabetic condition deteriorated and was rushed to the St. Mary’s Hospital in Mumias, where he died today evening,” Ekaya told K24 Dital.

Reports also indicate that he had tested negative upon release.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya in his condolence mourned the late MP as a “hardworking and selfless leader”.

“Hon Justus Murunga was a hardworking and selfless leader whom we worked together closely to develop Matungu. I’m deeply saddened by his death which has robbed Kakamega [of] a focused leader whose contribution in the development of our county will be missed. May his soul rest in peace,” said Oparanya on his Twitter page Saturday night.

Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi mourned Murunga saying “I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Matungu MP Hon. Justus Murunga. I pray that God will grant his family strength during this unfortunate time. My most sincere condolences to his family and the people of Matungu.”

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi also eulogized the late lawmaker: “I have learnt with great sadness of the untimely demise of Matungu MP, Hon. Justus Murunga Makokha this evening. My deepest condolences to his family and the people of Matungu Constituency whom he served with utmost passion and commitment. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The late ANC party MP served in the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock and Committee on Parliamentary Broadcasting and Library in the National Assembly.
