A middle-aged mother and her young child on Tuesday, October 20, drowned in the Lokesem river in Marigat, Baringo County.
The local authority had begun a search missing for the two after they were previously reported missing a day earlier.
According to reports, the mother and her 1-year-old son two died after they were swept away by heavy floods while crossing the huge stretch of river Lokesem on the road connecting Marigat to Loruk.
At the time, the two were not aware at the time that the water levels had gone up.
Area chief Titus Katikit while confirming the incident said the woman and her child were on their way home from a wedding when drowned.
The Bodies of the two were found by children who were fetching water.
The child was still tied to his mother’s back.
Police arrived at the scene on Tuesday evening and retrieved the bodies.
Their bodies were taken to the Baringo County Referral Hospital Mortuary.
The ongoing heavy rains in Tugen hills region remain a threat to the residents living on the lower side of the county.
The heavy rains have also interfered with learning in the region with 17 schools yet to resume after they were marooned with water.
Lake Baringo and Bogoria last week burst their banks flooding schools and other properties displacing at least 3,000 learners in 12 primary schools and 5 secondary schools.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang who visited the area assured learners that an alternative will be sought for them, no matter the situation.
