MP Didmus Barasa Faces 6-Months Jail Term Over Ksh1.8M Lawyer’s Fees

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa is facing a six-months jail term if he won’t pay a city-based lawyer Ksh1.8 million by tomorrow, Tuesday, November 24.

The lawyer, Alfred Ndambiri had filed a case in court demanding Ksh1.8 million in legal fees in an election petition case in 2017.

Ndambiri represented Barasa in the election petition filed against him by former Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga.

The lawyer had filed the case before magistrate D.M Kivuti after Barasa failed to pay him the legal fees.

Barasa while appearing before the court pleaded for leniency promising to pay the lawyer the money.

Barasa had pleaded with the court during the last adjournment stating that he was Covid-19 positive and was in self-isolation.

He further asked the court to grant him another 90 days to clear the payment but the magistrate gave him only 45 days which elapses tomorrow.

The judge directed that Barasa be given the last chance to appear before him on Tuesday, November 24 adding that if he would not have paid the lawyer by then he will be committed to a six-month jail term.

Barasa has not been forthcoming on his promise after Magistrate Kivuti granted his request.
