Panic rocked Mukaa in Makueni County after a passenger died in his seat aboard a bus that was travelling from Busia to Mombasa on Thursday night, November 26.
Confirming the incident, Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim told K24 Digital that the bus had made a stopover at Malili town for the night in compliance with the 10 pm curfew when the middle-aged male passenger mysteriously died.
Maalim told the publication that the passengers noted that one of them had died in his seat when they returned to the bus after refreshing and stretching outside.
According to the deceased sister, who was travelling with him, the man had been sick for some time.
The county commissioner however ruled out the possibility of the deceased having Covid-19 stating that his body temperature when he left Busia was 36.2C, which is normal.
“The health officers came in the morning and took the body to Machakos Level V Hospital mortuary,” Maalim told K24 Digital.
The local authorities added that they have taken the details of all 31 other people who were on the bus for contact-tracing should the deceased be confirmed to have Covid-19.
“This was sudden death…The bus has been fumigated by public health officials in line with Covid-19 protocols,” Maalim added.
The passengers were later allowed to continue with their journey to Mombasa after health officers fumigated the bus and in strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.
The body of the deceased has been moved to the Machakos Level V Hospital mortuary.
