In a rare twist of events, Kenya police have issued a statement indicating that Caroline Mwatha died of a botched abortion. In their version of events, police say that Caroline was seen last on 6th February 2019 by her relatives. DCI launched investigations and found out that Caroline was in constant communications with one Alexander Gitau Gikonya who is known to be working in Isiolo.

The police statement further says that text messages between Alexander and Caroline indicated that they discussed an abortion of a five month baby and after a few exchanges, the cost was agreed at ksh6000. Caroline then went to a clinic known as New Njiru Community in Dandora on 6th February 2019

Alexander who had negotiated the abortion from Ksh7000 to ksh6000 sent the money to Caroline.

The abortion was procured by the owner of the clinic, a lady known as Betty Akinyi Nyanya alias Betty Ramonya and 'Dr' Mike Onchiri alias Dr Mike.

Police believe that Caroline died in the clinic and the body was transferred to City Mortuary on 7th February 2019 at 4.42am.

The activist's body was booked under the name Carol Mbeki tag number 1495.

Records at the mortuary indicate the body was brought by a vehicle KBP 667P.

Police have so far arrested six people

  1. Betty Akinyi Nyanya
  2. Richard Ramonya (son to betty)
  3. Georgia Achieng
  4. Michael Onchiri
  5. Alexander Gitau (boyfriend to Caroline)
  6. Stephen Maina (Uber driver)

Questions were raised as to why the body took so long to be identified but the mortuary attendants have defended themselves saying that the body was booked as private indicating that the body was brought in by relatives.
