Many might have seen people on roller skaters on our roads especially Nairobi on weekends. This is an international sport. Yes i know i got you there. This is a sport recognized internationally and those skaters are either doing it for the fun of it or they are seriously training for a competition. As such, there is a federation that has been constituted to undertake management of this sport in Kenya, its name Kenya federation of roller skaters, KFRS. This organization is led by Secretary General Lamech Wafula.
The most recent time when this federation made headlines was in October 2018 when the organization was facing serious cash challenges as they had a African championships coming up in Ismailia Egypt on 28th of October to the 3rd of November 2018.
"We have been training since March this year and not taking part in this tournament may affect our chances of participating in the 2020 Olympics to be held in Japan,” said Wafula back then with regards to the financial woes facing the federation.
Apparently the team has been raising funds among themselves to fund various tournaments that they have attended outside the country. This includes Visa and Passport processing.
It is even shocking that the ministry of sports back then in 2018 flagged off a national team but never gave them any money not even for their tickets. This was under the old regime of Rashid Echesa and many are hoping that things will change with the new cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed. Well with this small organisation struggling to gain its footing in Kenya and convince the government that they are worth of being sponsored, their leadership under Lamec Wafula has been accused of corruption, favoritism and incompetence. Members have been ranting on facebook and twitter expressing their anger and one of them wrote to us.
Hi Abraham Mutai
Am a concerned skater in Kenya doing speed skating and rollball. My concern is about the increased corruption cases at the Kenya federation of roller skaters (KFRS) being championed by the federation SG Lamech. The federation was awarded three million by President Uhuru to go to the Kenyan skaters which they ate! The federation have been given the mandate by the ministry to choose the skaters to represent kenya in the on coming world championship in Spain 🇪🇸. But up to now, no one knows who have been selected neither which criteria was used. The deadline for registering the skaters is almost up and no communication have been made concerning the same.
