Ruto, Raila Allies Clash Over Voter Bribery Claims in Msambweni By-election

The ongoing Msambweni by-election has been marred by voter bribery accusations and counter-accusations pitting Tanga Tanga leaders and handshake leaders.

The hotly contested mini poll has seen Orange Democratic Movement leaders clash with Deputy President William Ruto allies after some were allegedly caught bribing voters.

Lunga Lunga Member of Parliament Khatib Mwashetani was forced to run for his life after he was allegedly caught bribing voters by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho at at Jomo Kenyatta Primary School in Hamisi.

ODM director of communication Philip Etale has also tweeted unconfirmed reports that former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama was arrested over similar voter bribery accusations at the same polling station Mweshetani and Joho clashed.

“Former Machakos Senator Muthama arrested as he and Khalwale tried to bribe voters at Jomo Kenyatta Primary School in Ramisi,” Philip Etale stated.

Earlier, there was a similar confrontation pitting Mvita MP Abdullswamad sheriff and Nyali MP Mohamed Ali at ODM candidate Omar Boga’s home area in Mworoni primary school, Ukunda township where the bribery claims surfaced.

Electoral body IEBC is yet to confirm the reports of voters being offered money to vote in a certain way.

Speaking after casting his vote at 8 am at Jogoo grounds in Ukunda township, Boga said the chaos erupted after MP Ali a close ally of DP and a supporter of the opponent was caught red-handed buying votes through his agents’ claims that were dismissed by Bader.

Boga said appropriate action had been taken. On the other hand, Bader said his agents had been arrested unfairly while heading home after visiting their respective polling stations.

He said he was aware of attempts to rig the election and questioned why some top police officers had been ordered to stay away from the poll.

He alleged that some of his supporters particularly women were being coerced and harassed and that no action had been taken even after lodging a complaint.

Deputy President William Ruto’s allies who have been campaigning for Faisal have alleged plans by the government to rig the election in favour of ODM candidate Omar Mboga.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen in a series of tweets alleged that there are plans to delay results from some polling stations to facilitate ballot staffing once the results are announced.

“Bwana IEBC Chair @WChebukati I bring to your attention plans to delay results of some polling stations including Mwaroni and Mwakigwena to facilitate ballot stuffing once the results are announced in other stations.  We know you are up to the task. Let the people decide,” Murkomen alleged.

At least 56 agents allied to Bader’s campaign team were on Monday night arrested for allegedly violating curfew regulations.

The 56 were arraigned in court where 25 of them were released, with Bader now accusing the police of harassing and frustrating his team.
