Suspected Al Shabaab Militants Ambush Police Escort

Suspected Al shabaab militants on Sunday, December 20 attacked a police vehicle escorting passenger buses along Lamu- Garsen road, in Tana Delta, Lamu County.

According to Abdi Ahmed of the Milhoi camp was in charge of the escort when they were attacked, the unknown armed men opened fire on the lead escort car at Lango La Simba, Nyongoro area.

The officers responded and a heavy exchange of fire ensued.

The unknown attackers are said to have been heavily armed and had laid an ambush on the roadside near Gamba.

Vehicles in the convoy behind the lead escort car were stopped as officers battled the armed men.

“The officers responded and a heavy exchange of fire ensued. The unknown attackers who were heavily armed had laid an ambush on the right side of the road at the scene as you face Gamba general direction,” a police report under OB6/20/12/2020 recorded at Gamba Police Station reads in part.

Coast regional police boss Gabriel Musau said security agencies pursued the attackers and that a reinforcement team from Tana Delta joined the operation.

“We will intensify security in the area to ensure passengers travelling for holidays are safe,” he told the Star on phone on Sunday.

The attackers disappeared into the bushes as police engaged them.
