Three Children Drown in Flooded Quarry

Residents of Mukinyai village in Molo, Nakuru County are in shock after three children of the same family drowned while playing near a flooded quarry.

Confirming the incident, area Assistant Chief Zack Munari said the incident happened at around 4pm on Saturday, December 12 while the minors were playing near the quarry which was flooded following heavy rains that have been experienced in the region recently.

According to the administrator, the children drowned while attempting to rescue each other.

They have since been identified as Michael Kiritu, 8, Victor Kaniaru, 11, and Grace Wairimu, 15, and all were pupils at the Mukinyai Primary School.

Munari said that Kaniaru drowned as he tried to rescue their younger brother, Kiritu before their elder sister, Wairimu also drowned trying to rescue her brothers.

The assistant chief further said that the local divers retrieved the bodies of the three children from the flooded quarry at around 6pm.

The incident happened along the border of Molo and Elburgon.

Munari urged parents and residents to take care of their children especially during this period of the Covid-19 pandemic and the December festive season.

The bodies were moved to Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary as police launch investigations into the incident.
